 relationship between creativity and knowledge

What is the relationship between creativity and knowledge? Knowledge and creativity are closely related, as knowledge provides the foundation for creativity. In other words, be more creative. However, what is creativity and knowledge? How do they collaborate? How does one influence the other?

First, creativity is using imagination, originality, and innovative ideas to produce something new or valuable. It is a cognitive process that involves generating new ideas and concepts for solving problems, survival, comfort, communication, or entertainment. Creativity is described as the capability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden habits, to find various ways to do something, and to generate solutions. Like Linda Naiman says, “Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. If you have ideas but do not act on them, you are imaginative but not creative”. However some people might think there is only one form of creativity, but there is not; there are three types of creativity: exploratory, transformational, and combinational. Exploratory is developing new ideas within a given space, transformational is ignoring fundamental rules to come up with something impossible yet highly creative ideas, and combinational is mixing old ideas and coming up with something new. Nevertheless, creativity is well known for being expressed in various forms, such as art, music, writing, design, and scientific innovation. It allows individuals to think outside the box, push boundaries, and challenge the status quo. Creativity is a practical skill that can be developed and cultivated through practice, experimentation, and exposure to new experiences and ideas.

On the other hand, knowledge is the understanding and awareness of information, facts, and skills acquired through experience, education, learning, and familiarity with objects or situations. It is a broad term encompassing various forms of understanding, including theoretical, practical, and technical knowledge. Knowledge is essential for making informed decisions, solving problems, and improving our lives. There are four ways of obtaining knowledge through the use of perception, inference, comparison, and words. It can be acquired through different mediums such as books, education, observation, and experiences. There are many types of knowledge; the most known are explicit, implicit, and tacit. Explicit knowledge is knowledge that was or is easy to articulate, write down, and share. Implicit knowledge is the application of explicit knowledge and transferable skills from one job to another. Finally, tacit knowledge gained from personal experience is more difficult to express.

Nevertheless, a broad knowledge base and understanding can help individuals identify problems, generate new ideas, and develop innovative solutions. While creativity uses imagination and originality to create something new or valuable, often building upon existing knowledge and ideas. It requires individuals to think critically, apply knowledge in new ways, and make links between ostensibly unrelated concepts. Therefore, while knowledge provides the tools and resources for creativity, creativity allows individuals to use that knowledge in unique and innovative ways to push boundaries and solve complex problems.
